Most women I see in my gynaecology clinic haven’t heard of adenomyosis, so I thought it was worth doing a quick explainer video.

Adenomyosis is a condition where cells similar to endometrial tissue grow into the muscle wall of the uterus (myometrium), causing the uterus to become enlarged and tender with some women having no symptoms, but many experiencing painful, heavy periods

It primarily affects us as we get older and studies show adenomyosis prevalence ranges from 6-39%. The condition predominantly affects women aged 35-50 years, with 60% of cases occurring in the 41-50 age group.

The main symptoms are:
* Heavy menstrual bleeding (91.2%)
* Severe menstrual pain (84.2%)
* Lower abdominal pain (84.2%)
* Enlarged, tender uterus
* Prolonged menstrual periods

There are various treatment options, the most successful are hormonal, as by suppressing menstruation we stop bleeding and growth of the disease:
* Hormonal therapy: Mirena coil, Dienogest (progesterone pill) Ryeqo, GnRH antagonists (to put you in to a temporary menopausal state and help restrict and shrink disease)
* symptom control: NSAIDs, tranexamic acid
* Surgical options: Hysterectomy for women who have completed their families. This is a major surgery though and should be considered carefully after trying other methods.
